FAQs

Why should I participate in this study?

The GSED assessment will improve health outcomes for children all over the world. Developmental assessments are critical in identifying gaps in health, social and educational services for children. By better understanding what development looks like across populations, we will be able to address the needs of children more thoroughly and effectively. Our study is a fun and easy opportunity for local families to make the world a better place for children everywhere

What will my child do during their visit?

Your child will get to play some everyday games and puzzles with our friendly researchers. We will also take some measurements of your child prior to doing these activities. We will have some toys, books and materials to share with you and your child during the visit, which most are excited to play with.

Where will in-person study visits take place?

At the Nancy Friend Pritzker Psychiatry Building at UCSF Mission Bay.

When will study visits take place?

We will accommodate your schedule as best as possible and prefer that you let us know about requirements regarding your child’s schedule before scheduling their visit. If your child takes a nap (or is sleepy) at a certain time of day, please share that information with us! Our team of researchers and pediatricians completely understands that toddlers and babies have a variety of needs, and we anticipate snack, bathroom and nap breaks will be needed during the visit.

Will you share my child’s developmental score (D-score) or performance on the assessment?

No. The GSED doesn’t measure the development of individual children. However, the knowledge that we gain from this study will be shared with the participants of the study before it is made widely available to the public. If you participate, we will communicate overall study results with you.

This study will be written up as conference presentations and publications so that other interested people may learn from the research. We can provide you with a copy of the papers once published if you wish. After publication, data will also be made publicly accessible by request. You and your child will not be identifiable in any published results or publicly available materials.

What are the possible risks if we participate in the study?

The study’s data collection procedures are all safe. The measurements are consistent with pediatric routine health care. There is a potential risk to privacy. We will do everything we can to keep your information confidential, but cannot guarantee total privacy.

How will I know if I can participate in all study steps?

We are looking to enroll both English and Spanish-speaking families. Please be aware that we are unable to invite everyone who is interested to participate in all parts of the study. There are many factors that we need to consider, including the number of children of a given age or sex needed for the study. The research team will let you know as soon as possible if you are invited to take part in the next stage.

Can I tell my friends and family about this study?

Absolutely! Please feel free to share this website or our form to help spread the word!  For more information, please contact the GSED team at [email protected].
